Tisbury Youth Dance Group

Tisbury Youth Dance Group (TYDG)’s creative dance fitness classes take place every Friday evening and Saturday morning term time at the Victoria Hall and Methodist Hall in Tisbury for both boys and girls of a wide range of abilities. During the classes, we explore a wide range of different types of movement including dance, yoga, cheerleading, street dance and fun games.

Creativity

At the TYDG classes, I strive to aid and encourage the children to develop their creativity, fitness levels and critical thinking. The children are able to enjoy the experience of dancing rather than worrying about achieving the perfect arabesque. This pressure-free environment provides the children with the best tools to try new things, improve their own abilities and express themselves freely to music. I find it very rewarding to watch a shy child blossom through dance.

The children are given plenty of opportunities to have ownership of the session, by choosing the music to dance to. This can range from The Sugar Plum Fairy to Disney Descendants, to the latest street music.

Sessions start with a safe mobilization and pulse-raising exercises, to ensure that the body is correctly warmed up. Using a variety of stimuli, dance material for the session is created. This material is then formed into sequences. Students are required to remember and retain their work which could finish in a performance. Sessions end with a cool down, stretch and an evaluation of the session.

Dance Awards

TYDG dancers have the option of working towards British Gymnastics, aerobic, dance, hand-held apparatus and fitness awards. Working towards their individual level, the children learn various dance movements, gymnastic shapes, aerobic and fitness skills. Once tested and passed, within class time, children receive certificates and badges, to show their achievement.

Working towards individual goals

Maypole dancing

Each year I teach a group of local children Maypole Dancing for the Ansty May Day celebrations. TYDG members are shown preference during selection.
